Aid for Cancer Research
OVER 59 YEARS OF GIVING.
In 1947, a small group of Boston-area women began meeting to discuss ways they could raise funds for cancer research. Once a year, these inspired and dedicated women hosted a "fundraising tea," and the proceeds from this annual event were donated to local hospitals and individuals involved in cancer research. Thus, AID FOR CANCER RESEARCH was born.
More than 60 years later, this unique and dedicated non-profit organization remains committed to the vision of its founders, quietly and effectively raising funds to support vital research programs and medical grants focused on fighting cancer.
THE TRADITION CONTINUES.
Since its inception more than 60 years ago, AID FOR CANCER RESEARCH has proudly raised millions of dollars. Greater Boston hospitals and cancer research facilities have tremendously benefited from the fundraising efforts of this dedicated and impassioned all-volunteer group of 25 women.
On May 10, 2010, the organization will host approximately 925 guests at its Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show. Additional sources of revenue have included an on-going all-occasion fund, an annual program book, a theatre party, and participation in fundraising and raffle events at local shopping malls and leading department stores.
A UNIQUE CONTRIBUTION TO MEDICINE.
Aid for Cancer Research channels requests for funds through a volunteer Medical Advisory Board comprised of eminent Boston physicians who evaluate the requests for research grants and equipment and make recommendations for the most effective use and application of the group's resources.
The primary focus of Aid for Cancer Research is to provide cutting-edge technological equipment to area institutions. It also provides resources to the most competent and talented research fellows in the same area. Its unique success is its ability to respond quickly to requests for equipment, the needs of a laboratory, or a fellowship at a critical point in time during a research project - a contribution unmatched by any government or private agency.
"I fell in love with Aid for Cancer Research, and that admiration, respect and affection has continued to grow. Your support is all the more important because it is available when we need it for start-up programs or pressing extensions of ongoing programs. You are the unsung heroes of cancer research."
---Dr. Emil Frei III, Physician-in-Chief and Chairman Emeritus, Dana Farber Cancer Institute and member of the Aid for Cancer Research Medical Advisory Board.
